Last May, with the expert and patient help of Christine Cox of
Volcano Arts, I made this beautiful book (approx. 4.25 x 5.5 in.). In the process I learned a bit about metalworking: sawing, filing, etching, soldering, pickling, polishing, making rivets (no glue is involved in this book). Here are some photos showing steps of the process.

Etching patterns in the metal involved a rubber stamp and acid. |

The closure, with homemade rivets. |

Coptic stitch binding. |

Finished binding. |

The assembled book (sans binding) next to its models. |
In April, I will be going back to work with Christine again. This time, since I have an idea of what's involved, I will try to create my own design. It's fun and rewarding work.
