13 of 100: Tom Deininger, trash artist

Another Facebook find today—these little jewels of discovery are the one thing that keeps me returning to that blasted site (well, except the daily Wordle, which I share in a small FB group).

Tom Deininger (b. 1970) is a Rhode Island–based artist "whose work combines environmental concerns with an innovative approach to image making. His found object assemblages are constructed from non-recyclable, non-biodegradable materials that pile up in our nation’s landfills. Works like this provide a thoughtful response to mass consumerism. He asks the viewer to reconsider the potential for transcendence of the mundane." It's a little like the work I featured back in April by the West Coast artistic collective Washed Ashore.

His creations, however, are amazingly representational—until you start looking closer, and closer, and closer. His Instagram page, as a consequence, features not still images but videos (the below is a screenshot; go to the IG link to explore further—but also, click on it to see it large).

Here is a very good short video that features Deininger speaking about his art:

And here is another short video from IG, from Weird Animations, showcasing a couple of his creations. I urge you to click on one of the links I offer here. His work is extraordinary.

And now, I'm going to go explore @weirdanimation. There's some wild-looking stuff there!
