Book Report: Happy Birthday to You

46. Dr. Seuss [Theodore Geisel], Happy Birthday to You (1959) (9/14/21)

I wrote the other day about Ezra Klein's three children's book recommendations. This was one of the three. I'd never heard of it. But since David's birthday was rapidly approaching, I figured it was worth a look—or rather, a purchase, sight unseen.

Turned out, it's delightful. David read it out loud, after opening his other present: white truffle oil. This book has got the doctor's full delight in language, the imaginative illustrations, a bit of a moral lesson. There's been backlash against Dr. Suess recently for racist depictions. Okay. He lived in a different time. He was human. No problem pulling 6 of his 60+ children's books. But I'm glad to discover this installment in his opus.

Here are a few spreads:

I believe we'll start a new tradition of reading this book out loud together on each and every birthday we have left.
