Noticing lxxxiv - heron photo

Herons in the Mist, by Duong Quóc Đinh

I spotted this photo on Facebook the other day, liked it—I mean, jeez, it's gorgeous!—and, as I am wont to do with beautiful photos of birds, shared it in my feed. That was four days ago. Since then, it's been liked 102 times—a good half of those people I don't know—and (this is what floors me) shared 771 times. I have no idea why these statistics are showing up on my post, rather than the photo just getting "shared on" outside my ken. But there it is. I caused a viral sensation! (Okay, mini-sensation.)

When I say above "as I am wont to do," I in fact do often share photos of birds, as something of an antidote to the news and politics—not all of it bad, but enough of it—that crowd into my feed. Many people have thanked me for these posts: a little bit of beauty and celebration. As one commenter on the above photo put it, "Big peaceful breath..." I do what I can. And I'm more than grateful for the diverse and magnificent birds of this earth, big and small.

(The next day, 1/9, the stats were up to 109 likes and 857 shares. Crazy!)
(As of 1/11, we're at 114 likes and 956 shares. I think it's slowing down now, though.)
