Richard Stine, artist

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the Australian cartoonist Michael Leunig. There, I mentioned that I was actually hoping to post about a cartoonist whose work I discovered in the 1970s, Richard Stine, but I couldn't find him then. (Not sure why. He was super easy to find today.)

So here are a few of his drawings, mostly about his "mad" and/or "zen" dogs. I enjoy his sardonically whimsical humor—or is it whimsically sardonic? "Face to Face with the Second Step" is one of my favorite works of art ever—I can almost see the dog's mind spinning, saying, "What now? What now? What do I really want?" (a dilemma I can identify with). I wish I had an original of that piece . . . I had a chance, back in the 1970s, when I met Mr. Stine at an art fair in Westwood Village, Los Angeles—but I was a poor student, and "original art" wasn't in my budget. I did buy a ring-bound, cardboard-covered book of his work, though (see second entry below)—which I need to dig out of the garage. Putting it on the list.

Hodgepodge 365/365 - The End

Not the end of this blog, just of this second 365 project. The first one I called "365 True Things"—as in, true things about me, which I mostly managed to stick to. This iteration I called "Hodgepodge" to give myself leeway, to see what caught my attention on any given day. Both of them were fun (if occasionally I had to struggle to come up with something, anything!).

And now? I intend to shift a bit from a product-oriented practice to a more process-oriented one. It will still involve daily tasks, but not necessarily hard outputs—except in the form of a handwritten journal that I will start keeping, to help me pay attention to such things as resistance, satisfaction, roadblocks, flow, doubt, strength, irritation, pleasure, inspiration. (I'll be using the butterfly Decomposition Notebook I mentioned the other week.)

But I'll still show up here. I've got all sorts of projects in mind, plus there are always things that catch my attention that I enjoy sharing. So if you've been following me, please continue to check back! I enjoy your company.

As I've finished up this "Hodgepodge," I've posted more and more poems. I'll end with one of my favorites. It's also about a farewell, though of a different sort than this. (You can watch the poet read it herself here, if you wish.)

It Was Like This: You Were Happy (2006)

Jane Hirshfield

It was like this:
you were happy, then you were sad,
then happy again, then not.

It went on.
You were innocent or you were guilty.
Actions were taken, or not.

At times you spoke, at other times you were silent.
Mostly, it seems you were silent—what could you say?

Now it is almost over.

Like a lover, your life bends down and kisses your life.

It does this not in forgiveness—
between you, there is nothing to forgive—
but with the simple nod of a baker at the moment
he sees the bread is finished with transformation.

Eating, too, is a thing now only for others.

It doesn’t matter what they will make of you
or your days: they will be wrong,
they will miss the wrong woman, miss the wrong man,
all the stories they tell will be tales of their own invention.

Your story was this: you were happy, then you were sad,
you slept, you awakened.
Sometimes you ate roasted chestnuts, sometimes persimmons.

Hodgepodge 364/365 - Fever

I had in mind something more ambitious than what I am about to post, but as I watch my temperature continue to climb (100.2, 100.8, and now . . . ☞), and as I realize that all I really want to do is lie on the couch under my comfy fleece blanket, my dog at my feet, and not think about anything, maybe just snooze some more, I am willing to toss ambition out the window.

Tomorrow, I will try to summon my forces for some sort of a suitable sendoff as I bid adieu to this second and final 365 blog (really: never again!). But for now, here are a few haiku (loose) that I discovered yesterday—from a class a few years ago with Washington state poet Sarah Zale—as I cleaned out my mailboxes, on another dead day at the Napa Red Cross Service Center.

I find that every time I stumble on old poems, I continue to work them and work them. It's so hard to get them "right." I've tweaked these, and they still strike me as clumsy. I may well tweak them again, next time I visit this page.

So I will say this, regarding ambitions: in whatever I decide to do for my next "365"—because yes, I've become rather addicted to the discipline of something creative every day, and to accountability of some sort—I am going to try to fit poetry in. I may start by reading Edward Hirsch's How to Read a Poem.

Anyway, here are those haiku (loose):

Sparrows jostle finches,
clamoring; oak tit
waits, tilted
on dry stalk.

Feet crunch over
mat of buckeye leaves—
poison oak glowing red.

Egret balances rapt—
lightning stab,
fish flails . . .
rippling rings of water.

Notebooks filled with scrawls:
quotes, to-do-lists, memories—
thirty-four years gone.
